Help children DECODE what they read & write later on.
The technical skill of reading and spelling words is called "decoding". There are specific things we can do to help children be able to "sound out words" and spell later on.
But these things will not necessarily help them understand, enjoy, or think critically and creatively about what they read.
Help children UNDERSTAND what they read & write.
There are specific things we can do to help children understand, enjoy, and think critically and creatively about what they read and write - both now & later on.
But these things will not necessarily help them be able to read or spell at the WORD level (decode) later on.
